Igor Jovanovic records and performs under the name of Lezet. Someone's comment about the sound of Lezet was "like Zorn without saxophone," and Zorn's influence is quite clear in a lot of Lezet's other work. For Meatronic Recordings, he submits this patient study of the interaction of piano with distortion, and it is quite hypnotizing once you figure out what is going on. Contra-puntal lines throw off side-band distortion in beautiful and startling ways somehow. (less)

Otolathe presents a 7 track collection of explorations in what he calls Big Block Minimalism. Employing technologies like thyratron tube synthesizers, unstable old analog solid-state machines, field recordings, digital sampling, custom software, analog tape, and vinyl, Big Block Minimalism comes at you in large chunks. Unlike most "minimalist" works there is a shedload of brutal loud aggression going on. It’s ambient, but it’s noise. It is an effort to document the auditory instability of analog circuitry, but it is also a search for digital instability by setting grimy and crusty synthesizers such as the Metasonix S-1000 Wretchmachine and Hal McGee’s old Octave Cat into aleatoric and stochastic software constructs via Max/MSP, Reaktor and Ableton Live 7. A singular collection of disparate musicians presents a a blockbuster exploration of multi-genre splicing and improvisation. This collaboration features Big Sugar Victorious's Santo diRizzia on cassette manipulation and acousmatics, Beardtongue's Joshua Manchester on extended drum techniques, Insecticide Lobotomy's Josh Sherman on custom electronics and no-input mixer mojo, Don Butler of HUNKER DOWN ROY on low-frequency electro-acoustic oscillator, and Otolathe's K. Paul Boyev on analog subtractives. Ha, then they all trade rigs and proceed to fuck shit up even more. Then Otolathe takes the result and digitally denatures or otherwise adulterates this potent broth. (less)

These tracks were the outcome of attempting to wrangle as many interesting sounds out of a mixer with the gain turned up on each individual channel while 1/4 inch chords (plugged into only the mixer) fed back, buzzed and hummed. In a nutshell, this approach employed feedback looping and other minimal-input tinkering, using two busted RadioShack mics, a noisey little mixer, a bunch of faulty chords, one cheap distortion pedal, one effects rack mount thing (Zoom 1204) and a pair of headphones for more feedback. All material recorded onto four track, thus each track contains four layers of sound. Various effects, primarily chorus and reverb, were used sparingly to create depth and distinction. By the way, the individual layers, they were used in real-time as the layers were recorded to tape.

I was trying to get as close to the sound of the machines / equipment themselves, focusing on all the incidental sounds that are usually viewed as undesirable by-products of them (hums, squeaks, et al ;) The more pronounced modulations originate from the overdriven gains on the mixer pushing its naturally occurring hum into the red, where the signal seemingly disappears beyond the audible range of human ears. Fun! No vocal sounds, keyboards, computer generated samples, or instrument sounds were used in these recordings. The lone exception of an outside source being the sound of a plane flying over at 11:30-11:39 in the third track, which sounds incredibly well placed for it having been a coincidence.

As the title suggests, this is the second in what will be an ongoing series of releases I plan on producing. The initial gravity maps was released October 2007 on the Norwegian label Ambolthue, as both a limited edition CD-R as well as an MP3 release.
